Barcelona, Catalonia 2018-19

The following pictures are a portrait of the streets of Barcelona during three major events in recent Spanish history: The fallout, police brutality and arrest of political activists and politicians during the Catalan Referendum, the collapse of the Spanish government after widespread corruption charges resulting in the caretaking government of Pedro Sánchez, and finally, the exhumation of Gen. Francisco Franco from the Valley of the Fallen.

With these instabilities, ghosts of the civil war have awoken, questioning nationalist movements formally suppressed by Franco in Catalonia; during a time of economic crisis, homelessness, gentrification and an out of control tourism industry that is destroying Barcelona for the people – in or out of Spain. There is no independence without social revolution.
